The complete collection of Alexandre ALEXEIEFF’s films (Russia - 1933 / 1980)

This disc contains 30 films, including 27 realized by Alexandre ALEXEIEFF, so his integral works finally joined here, of this artist and exceptional inventor, who carried in the years 1930 the cinema of animation to the most degree of artistic requirement.

Alexandre ALEXEIEFF (Kazan, Russia, 1902- Paris 1982) arrives in Paris in 1920 and works as a dress designer and decorates for Louis JOUVET, Georges PITOËFF , les Ballets Russes and les Ballets Suédois. He illustrates the texts of GOGOL, POUSHKIN, DOSTOÏEVSKY, POE, BAUDELAIRE, MALRAUX, MAUROIS. He decides to invent "animated engravings" (la gravure animée) and builds in 1931 with Claire PARKER "the pinscreen" on which they make Night on bald Mountain (1933), En passant (1943), The Nose (1963), Pictures at an Exhibition (1972), Three Moods (1980), and Orson Welles’ Trial prologue. To support his work, he makes numerous advertizing films from 1935 to 1964, with many technical innovations.

Claire PARKER (Boston- Paris 1981) meets ALEXEIEFF in the late 20’s and brings him a decisive cooperation for the creation of the pinscreen. Co-author of all the personal films of ALEXEIEFF, she also cooperate on most of the advertising films. She married ALEXEIEFF in 1941.
