What exactly are ‘animated’ films?
Contrary to ‘live action’, animation doesn’t aim to represent reality, or to reproduce faithfully what takes place in front of the camera.
The specificity of this multiform cinematic technique is that it proclaims its nature as an artefact. Because of this approach, animated films demonstrate that ‘sculpting in time’ or ‘change mummified’ to mention only Tarkovski, Bazin and Deleuze, do not exist. Today’s evolution of the audio-visual industries amplifies and divulges the convention of cinematographic ‘trompe-l'œil’, updating the problematic around animation. An ancestor of the cinema, and a key factor of its future.
