An animated postcard, according to the principle of "lenticular" : by turning the card, the showman of Magic Lantern shows a hurricane on the white screen ...

  • The engraving Kiobenhauns Skilderie is by Johann Friedrich CLEMENS (Denmark - 1870)
  • The plate of Magic Lantern is by Andres KRÜSS, named TYPHON (Hamburg - 1850)

This postcard large format (14x21 cm) was published on the occasion of the exhibition "LANTERNE MAGIQUE ET FILM PEINT - 400 ans de Cinéma" presented at the Cinémathèque Française, from 14 October 2009 to 28 March 2010.

The lenticular image is a technology that allows for "interlace" multiple images simultaneously on the same support, and allows for different effects :

  • the "flip" effect, a swapping of two images-each vanishing and then reappearing from one to another.
(this is the case with this animated postcard)
  • the "zoom" effect, illusion of movement from background to foreground
  • the "morphing" effect, conversion of one image into another is used to create the illusion of transformation
  • animating multiple images
  • relief 3D, illusion of depth and perspective, no special glasses to see the pictures

The card :

An operator of a magic lantern - Lenticular Postcard

How to use the card :
