The American artist Joe FREEDMAN proposes here to us his version of the Rotoreliefs of Marcel DUCHAMP : the original discs were placed on a phonograph and gave visual illusions.

Joe Freedman gives us his own vision of this optical toy.

The Tops :

3 ROTORELIEFS by Joe FREEDMAN (USA)

1 - the color circles seem to rotate indepentently
(Based on the didactic toy developed by Ludwig HIRSCHFELD-MACK at the bauhaus in the early 1920s)
2 - the inner lines make colors and streams of light
(A London toymaker, C. E. BENHAM, produced this disc in 1894)
3 - a green glow forms on the outer circle while spirals swirl and glimpses of stem make sparks seem to fly

Video :

Take notice !
The video format shows badly the illusions :
they are here only to give you an idea of what you’ll see !

Joe FREEDMAN - Photo

Joe FREEDMAN started his career as a classical book designer in the late 1970’s. His limited editions of Amy CLAMPITT’s poetry have been purchased by numerous universities and private collectors. They feature handmade pulp paper paintings and beautiful letterpress typography. He has also designed hundreds of trade books and museum catalogs.

Mr FREEDMAN began designing and producing optical toys and pop-up sculptural toys and cards in 1999. All the pop-ups are made in small quantities. Edition size is variable depending on how bored he gets while making them ! It seems there is always a new thing to be made, and that is where the fun is...
